Este tema de Billy Joel piensa una ojeada cronológico de los acontecimientos históricos más relevantes sucedidos a lo largo de su historia, extendiéndose de marzo de 1949, hasta el año 1989, en el que fue editado en el disco Storm Front.
We Didn’t Start the Fire, fue compuesta por el artista después de una charla con el hijo de John Lennon, Sean, el que se quejaba de medrar en tiempos agitados, atribuyendo a la generación de Joel la compromiso por ello.
El tema, representa en cierta manera una declaración acerca que el conmocionado y caótico estado de todo el mundo no son compromiso de solo una generación, sino más bien una sucesión de acontecimientos poco afortunados, que lentamente, sin que se tuviese una total conciencia, han decantado en la situación mundial.
Joel afirma que la canción nació de su interés por la historia, a la que le hubiese dado gusto ocuparse de no haber triunfado en el rock and roll. Opuestamente a la mayor parte de sus creaciones, escribió la letra antes que nada, para después adaptar la música a esta.
